OPEN DOORS: BOTH LOGIE KIRKS SATURDAY & SUNDAY 13/14 SEPTEMBER
At the turn of the 21st century, the Old Logie Kirk was a ruin. The main building was overgrown with ivy and the Kirkyard had become dangerous with many stones at risk of toppling over and injuring people. It had got to the stage where it either had to be shut and left to nature or people had to step in to save it.
The Logie Old Graveyard Group was set up by Eleanor and Joe Young in 2007. Its aims were to stabilise the Kirk building, restore the Kirkyard to a safe condition and create a new interprative centre in an out building that had once been used as a watch hut. Volunteers cleared the site, cuting back the overgrown bushes, tidying the verges and creating a record of the graves stone by stone.
Historic Scotland (now Historic Environment Scotland) and Stirling Council were among those involved in the planning and in 2010, building work finally got under way. It was decided early on that it would not be right to restore the whole Kirk, it was so far gone that it would be a case of rebuilding it more than restoring it, but it needed to be made structurally sound. That turned out to be a major project but after a lot of work by a lot of people we got it to a state where it was safe to invite the public in again.
Since then it has all been about maintenance, since it's a never-ending battle to keep the site secure and safe. The council cuts the grass but everything else is up to the band of volunteers that work to keep the Kirk and Kirkyard open to the public. The same volunteers also take the guided tours during July and August and are working behind the scenes to promote the site.
